Amongst them, is artist Carly Whitaker-Wilson, who is of South African, Canadian and Dutch-Indonesian descent. She shares her personal experiences on identity, stereotypes and belonging in the context of the diverse city of Vancouver, Canada. "I always froze when having to fill out the ethnicity portion of any government documentation. I spent at least ten minutes here. Confused. Uncertain. Every time. It never felt right when my darker skinned Dutch-Indonesian mother told me to check off “Caucasian” as If it were an obvious choice. And to this day I still struggle with knowing exactly what to sign myself off to with the lack of boxes even available for my mixed race."
